Places to Volunteer in Apex

Students here at AFHS join organizations like Key Club and National Honor Society, which both require students to get a quota of volunteer hours. Even though many students volunteer to show it on college applications, it can become a great opportunity to show leadership and help the community.

Horse and Buddy

Located in New Hill, NC, Horse and Buddy can be a viable option for students looking to help out their close community. On picturesque green pastures in the NC countryside, lies this therapeutic riding program. Horse and Buddy’s mission remains to be assisting adults and children with special needs using equine therapies. Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age but don’t need to have extensive knowledge of horses to help walk one. Horse and Buddy’s wonderful cause brings fun for both rider and volunteer. For more information, visit Horse and Buddy’s website.

Brown Bag Ministry

Founded in 2005, Brown Bag Ministry remains one of the most popular places for teenagers to volunteer. They aim to help marginalized groups by providing for many needs like food, water, and shelter. Volunteers can assist in courses to help those in need gain leadership and career skills. Other ways to help include packing food kits, like sandwiches, fruits, and vegetables to be distributed out to those who need them on Saturday mornings. Brown Bag Ministry helps those in tough situations, and anyone can help. To volunteer at Brown Bag, sign up on their website.

Read and Feed

Students at AFHS who love to read and work with children find their calling in this organization. Read and Feed’s vision helps underprivileged elementary schoolers by tutoring them in literacy and giving them meals in a community environment. As a high school student under 18, students must bring along their parents or guardian when tutoring the elementary students. Once over 18, students can not only tutor by themselves, but also drive mobile buses that transport the elementary students. They can also use their own car to transport food to the different schools. For more information, visit Read and Feed’s website.

Through the varied methods of helping those in need, AFHS students seem certain to find a cause that inspires them. Volunteering remains a wonderful activity to do during free times such as spring break, and every hour contributes to a worthwhile cause.
