Living a healthy life can be interpreted in any number of ways. Everyone has their own idea of what makes life worth living. Using all-natural products has risen to popularity as one way people pursue a healthy lifestyle.
In this context, “natural” means that a product doesn’t contain man-made ingredients, such as preservatives. The Sustainable Living Guide claims natural living holds products of this sort in high regard as they, “improve [a person’s] wellness but also help protect the environment.” The specifics surrounding how to live naturally can be fuzzy because every person has their own way of defining it. Earthly Living defines the lifestyle as, “living in harmony with the earth and making conscious choices to use natural, toxic-free and organic products.” Whole People considers it living, “the way that nature meant [humans] to.” Healthy Christian Home alternatively perceives it as, “the way God intended.” From these descriptions, a general definition can be formed; natural living depends on materials that haven’t been modified by humans and values a strong connection with nature.
Among the many individual perceptions of what natural living includes, grounding, or making direct contact with the Earth, has been around for a while. The Barefooter organization strives to attract more people to the lifestyle of going around on their shoeless feet as a form of grounding. They claim that they, “value the comfort, health benefits, and sensory pleasures of barefoot living.” The NCBI supports the previous assertion of health benefits that comes with grounding, referring to it as, “a simple, natural, and accessible health strategy against chronic inflammation.”
A few celebrities have personally promoted the lifestyle. Jessica Alba founded Honest, a company which sells all-natural products. Forbes states that Alba felt moved to start the company when she, “couldn’t find reasonably priced natural and eco-friendly baby products.” Similarly, Garden of Life and Alicia Silverstone teamed up to create the supplement mykind Organics, which asserts itself to be, “made with real food, no added sugar, artificial sweeteners, flavors, colors and no chemicals whatsoever.” Moreover, Billie Eilish released a vegan fragrance line with Ulta. With her significant influence, “Eilish regularly uses her platform to promote cruelty-free and conscious living,” according to One Green Planet.
Living “naturally” appeals to many for its versatility and personal interpretation. It makes people feel like their choices benefit their health and the Earth. While some may feel confused by those who actively choose to spurn footwear and scientifically-proven medications, the lifestyle doesn’t impact others directly, unless one feels offended by an encounter with a barefoot individual at Walmart.
