Sydney Scarbel (11), the middle attacker on the team, has been playing soccer since age ten. She recounts, “my mom signed me up for one of the little leagues, so I played on a co-ed team and really loved it.” Since then, Scarbel has been a driving force on all the teams she has played for, delighting in the competitiveness and environment that exists on the field. Scarbel explains her position on the soccer team, describing her role as being “primarily responsible for transitioning the ball through the middle of the field to get up to the forwards.”

Currently, Scarbel feels confident in herself and the team, saying, “we’ve been doing really well so far.” She continues, sharing the sentiment, “high school is a lot more fun than club, sometimes, because it’s more relaxed and I like the rivalries against different schools.” Conversely, she expresses her wish that her team, “didn’t have to play the same team twice. I wish that we could play different teams from different areas that are farther away.”

When asked about the team environment, Scarbel emphasized the love and fondness she has for her teammates. “We have a great team bond,” she explains. “A lot of the girls I’ve played with since I was little, so it’s nice to be able to reconnect with them.” The relationship they have with one another helps them enjoy each other’s company and be a united force on the field.

In terms of her future, Scarbel expressed that she has “aspirations to play at college.” The University of Tampa lists among her college interests because, “the campus is beautiful and I would love to go to Florida for college,” though she hasn’t decided yet. The AFHS Women's Varsity soccer team has phenomenal athletes like Scarbel who put their heart and soul into the game, helping make them a power player in the conference.
