Clubs have returned for this school year and with more among their ranks. A few of the new clubs include the Neuroscience Club and Esports Club. And for those on the fence about joining a club, colleges “typically seek students with significant extracurricular accomplish- -ments in addition to strong academic credentials,” according to U.S. News Now that students have regained their ability to form clubs, they have taken the opportunity to bring attention to many meaningful topics.
The Neuroscience Club exemplifies a new club introduced this year. Founded by Aurea Michael (11), this club will focus on how scientists study the brain, as well as major neurological discoveries from the past and present. In addition to the educational side of the club, Michael intends for the club to raise awareness surrounding the importance of the brain’s health. Michael felt compelled to initiate this club because of her fascination with the brain itself. With Ms. Conley as the advisor, the club will take place in the Compass Studio on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month after school. The Remind can be accessed with the code @afhsneuro and the Google Classroom uses the code cig5sn7.
Joshua Nizzi organized the Esports Clubs this year to`unite a community of individuals who enjoy participating in digital athletic activities and want to further develop the field. Inspired by the Super Smash Bros. tournament held in 2020, Mrs. Smith says she wanted to sponsor the club as result of the diverse crowd the tournament drew. Led by Nizzi, the club meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month from 2:30 to 3:15 in the library. It has a virtual option for meetings and the Remind uses the code @afhsesp.
Clubs add a bit of spice to school life. They can provide creative outlets, enable the pursuit of hobbies or careers, and may even benefit the community. Though the window for forming new clubs this year has closed, information on currently established clubs can be found under Activities on the AFHS website. Clubs help round out the school experience: they build relationships, grant leadership opportunities, and allow students to expand their knowledge on subjects of interest.
