Becoming a Well-Rounded Student

The words “well-rounded” often haunt the minds of high schoolers hoping to make an impression on potential colleges when filling out applications. What does that even mean, to be well-rounded? AFHS counselor Billy Lane provides some promising answers, saying that not only could being well-rounded mean a better chance at acing the application process, but also a more fulfilling high school experience.

Acing the Transcript

The first area for a student to be successful may be obvious—academics. Building a class schedule that juggles rigor and interest may seem like a daunting task, so Mr. Lane advises making what he calls a 360° decision: “When deciding…on the rigor of classes…think about that class or those classes in the context of [your] other classes and other responsibilities [you] have.” When asked about AP classes, Mr. Lane says “1) there is no magic number, and 2) you need to take the number that you can do well in while keeping some balance in your life.” He reminds students that in the quest to be well-rounded, academics only make up one part of the journey.

Getting Involved

The second—and possibly more fun—path to the top exists in extracurricular activities.

“Think about depth versus breadth,” says Lane. “Rather than spreading [yourself] too thin just to say ‘I was a member of all these clubs’…focus on the extracurriculars [you] actually have a passion for.” Students can reference the AFHS website to find the extensive list of clubs. Also be sure to look up information on school sports tryouts and upcoming productions and showcases to get involved in.

Dive into Summer Enrichment

Though students have limited time during the year, summers can provide an excellent opportunity for enrichment. Whether it be an internship, academic program, or summer job, getting involved in an area of interest during the time off can be a way for students to explore their capabilities. For students looking for opportunities, Mr. Lane directs students to the AFHS Student Services website, which has a long list of options. “We live in a great area for students to take advantage of those summer opportunities,” says Lane. “I would encourage students…to take advantage of their summers and to do something enriching…that shows growth, that shows that you can commit to something and see it through.”

Mind over Matter

Ultimately, the foundation of a well-rounded student lies primarily in the mindset. College Express points out that the essence of what it means to be well-rounded lies in dedication and hard work. “Find a balance while still challenging yourself and enjoying your high school career,” it recommends. “Continually develop yourself in diverse areas.” Mr. Lane defines balance, saying “balance means time to still eat well, exercise, get the rest you need, see your friends, and still be a typical teenager.”
