The best athletes have innate self-confidence, and they truly believe that they will win. They also have the confidence to deal with any unexpected situations that may arise and to speak up for themselves or their teammates when appropriate. Among all the talented varsity athletes, Gabe Proctor (12) shares his experience on why he plays the sport of basketball. For him, basketball represents more than just two teams competing with an objective of shooting a ball into a hoop. Proctor said his main influence that led him into playing basketball was his dad coaching: “I've always grown up seeing people play and enjoy watching which later led me to play as well.”
When asked if he wanted to pursue a career in basketball, Proctor explains that his plans for the future involve playing at the D3 level and continuing the sport throughout his entire college career. Proctor speaks passionately about opting to pursue a career in, “some form of business.” He talks about where he wants to play as well: “I like Guilford right now. That’s where my brother plays.” The varsity basketball team last year included Proctor’s brother, who graduated last year. When asked about how the sport impacted his life, Proctor shared that, “It showed me how to work hard and has given me morals to follow.” This experience made him enjoy playing for both the school and outside organizations.
Proctor also talks about what makes a great athlete, “I think it’s really about the determination and really giving it your all as a player.” He recommends everyone take what they can and not to overwork themselves. Lastly, he talks about his current experience on the team. “We’re doing really well right now. If we win the next two games we can win the championship.” He really enjoys playing for the AFHS varsity team and with not only his team but with his friends. Gabe Proctor showed that he always had the burning passion for basketball. Proctor loves to share his experience with the sport, from what influenced him to play basketball to the hardships he has gone through to excel as a player. Altogether, he has expressed what it takes to thrive on the court and has the confidence of a winner.
