In volleyball, every person has a job or responsibility on the team. According to Dick’s Sporting Goods some people have the job of a setter, a player who receives a pass and places the ball where another player can spike it. Others hold the libero, where they focus on digging the balls in the back row, or covering a fellow teammate who tries to block the ball. Ashlyn Haynie (11) plays the role of the pin hitter, which means she plays right and outside positions; she also occasionally plays in the back row, helping to make plays so her teammates have the best opportunity to score. Being a hitter requires strength, coordination, balance, and intelligence, all of which Haynie displays on and off the volleyball court.
Haynie started playing volleyball during her younger years. She remembers her mom asking her if she wanted to play, and that was that. She has been playing for approximately eight years, and throughout that time, she has played for many teams on different occasions, making herself known in the world of sports. When asked about why she loves the game, she answered by saying that playing with her friends has always been fun, and she loves the adrenaline rush she gets when competing, and cheering on her teammates. “We are very good at encouraging each other and competing, and I guess that’s how we are a very good team,” says Haynie.
Haynie’s coach, Reagan Petty, talks about how she brings so much spirit and happiness to the team, saying, “She always has a smile on her face which keeps us uplifted.” Not only has Haynie shown her team spirit, but she also plays a position on the court that she hadn’t in previous seasons. “She's stepped into a position this year where she is playing a lot on the right side and back row for the first time on our team. And she’s doing a really good job.” Petty says. Haynie undoubtedly has such a positive impact on her team, contributing to being a leader and making sure that everyone plays their best, all while having fun.
Ashlyn Haynie has some choices to make about her future; where she wants to play in college and if she wants to play in Division 1 or 2. Regardless of where she goes, she exhibits natural leadership abilities and qualities that make her an amazing friend, leader, and teammate.
