Walking in NC's Winter Wonderland

For those enjoying the chilly winter in North Carolina, but still wanting to preserve the cozy, celebratory spirit of the season, students should look into these wonderful places in NC to visit, ranging from the mountains of Asheville to high country ski slopes.

Asheville, a region resplendent with mountainous terrain, covered in forests and waterfalls, would perhaps be best known for the Biltmore Estate. This luxurious family home of the Vanderbilts, built during the Gilded Age, prides itself on being “a marvel of elegance and charm.” Winter at Biltmore rightfully remains one of its most beloved traditions, with the grounds of the estate becoming a world of enchantment. According to the Biltmore's official website of the estate, the event runs from November 2021 to January 2022 and features two different experiences. Visitors can spend the night in any of the nearby hotels, browse Antler Village, and eat in local restaurants.

The high country also remains a wonderful place to spend the chilly season. From skiing resorts to hiking trails. Sugar Mountain, NC, remains best known for its Sugar Mountain Resort, hosting a wide range of winter activities, besides skiing, including golfing and hot springs.

See Sugar , an online travel guide to a vacation in the village of Sugar Mountain details events to participate in, like Sugar Mountain Tubing Park, comprising 700-foot tubing lanes and the Magic Carpet Lift. Ice Skating at Sugar Mountain remains a big attraction too, with Sugar Mountain Resort’s 10,000 square foot outdoor rink being the perfect place to spend a winter day with family and friends. Finally, those who enjoy the snowy nature of the holiday season more so than shopping and cozying up to the fireplace, should look to Snowshoe Tours, hosted by the resort as well. Tours consist of scenic winter scenes, along with experienced guides helping on the way.

While it may be fun to travel outside of the state to visit warm, tropical beaches and bustling city-scenes, AFHS students should remember that North Carolina offers many fun winter attractions as well.
