On April 4th-8th, the AFHS International Club hosted World Cultures Week, a version of a spirit week designed to start conversations between students about international cultures. Mrs. Pysz, the advisor for the club, hoped that the event would make it easier for students to inquire about each others origins and cultures in order to cultivate a better understanding of their school. The students of AFHS enjoyed the festivities, from the dance performances to best attire competitions. "It's very cool to see the many kids participating in international culture week." says Mr. Wight. "For the kids to come out...at lunch, they're giving up their time, it's pretty cool."
Monday: We are the World
Monday's attire theme centered around countries students knew about or wanted to visit.
Tuesday: We are Many Countries
The second day of World Cultures Week featured different country's flags, matching the banners in the hallways.
Wednesday: We are Multilingual
On Wednesday, the students flocked to the guest speakers table to learn about different languages. Throughout the week, the table featured guest speakers from all over the world.
"I speak Korean. [People] ask me how to say hello, I love you, things like that."
-Aimee Kim, guest speaker
Thursday: We are an International Community
Prizes for the week's contest winners included foreign snacks and treats. Students checked out a map created by the International Club showing other countries that AFHS students have lived in.
Friday: We are the United States of America
A representative from China answered student questions on the table on Friday. She commented that many people receive misinformation about other countries from the Internet. "Not everything on the Internet is true. That's why we need to talk to people that are actually from the country to learn about it."
