TikTok, much like other social media sites, has its bad side. Some of TikTok’s users have been known to use the platform to make fun of others, engage in the exploitation of minors, and participate in challenges that involve vandalism. On the bright side, many creators use the platform to promote good deeds, talents, and positive messages.
A TikTok user by the name of isaiahgarza uses his account to help the homeless people of Skid Row of downtown LA. Instead of running his account for fame, money, or exploitation of the homeless, isaiahgarza promotes good deeds on his platform. isaiahgarza sets up GoFundMes and posts what he does with those donations to his account in order to update the people who donated as well as people who are interested these stories.
In addition to helping the homeless, TikTok has always been filled with talented people, such as TikTok user Micah Palacio, who posts singing videos. Songs covered by Palacio include Stay, Stitches, Payphone, and many more. As of September 30th, Palacio has gained over 183 thousand followers and obtained 4.1 million likes. His most popular video has over 10 million views and shows a singing duet with another TikTok user, Sara Corthran. Corthran may be most popular on the app for her viral post of her singing “As the World Caves In” by Matt Maltese. When asked about his personal life, Palacio stated he always loved music growing up. When he was in middle school, he messed around with making beats, and he always knew no matter what he did in life he would want to do something with music. Now 20 years old, Palacio started taking music seriously just over a year ago, claiming that he always made music but never truly pursued it. With such a talent, many wonder if he would want to make singing a full time job. Palacio responds: “I am planning on it! But I want to do more than just music in my life. I think God is gonna leave me where I need to go! I want to be an entertainer that brings joy to this broken world!!!”
There are many bad things on TikTok and social media in general, but users should remember that many good themes make themselves known on the platform as well.
