Known as the celebrity event where the spotlight turns towards fashion itself, the 2021 Met Gala returned this year with looks ranging from spectacularly stunning to absolutely mind boggling. The theme, “American Independence,” gave designers freedom to fabricate pieces along the broad spectrum of late American fashion trends, the flag colors, etc. Many unforgettable outfits worn at the 2021 Met exemplified this theme.
Lil Nas X
If anyone went above and beyond this year, it would be Lil Nas X. Instead of displaying the typical one outfit, Lil Nas X revealed three shining gold Versace pieces, uncovering each on the red carpet in front of the eyes of hundreds of flashing cameras. After first appearing in a long trailing cape embellished with sophisticated beading, the singer showed off his next outfit, a reflective gold 6-pack suit of armor. The final outfit had Lil Nas X in a form fitting bodysuit embellished head to toe in jewels and gems.
Kim Kardashian
Dressed literally head to toe in black, Kim K took monochrome to a whole new level. Her Balenciaga dress encompassed the complete opposite of a traditional Kim Kardashian look - form fitting and physique flaunting. According to US Magazine, the inspiration stemmed from Kim’s recent divorce from Kanye West.
Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish, known for her grunge baggy clothing, made heads turn when she showed up to the Met wearing a nude princess-like dress that hugged her curvature. Oscar de la Renta designed the dress, and Eilish walked the carpet in a Marilyn Monroe inspired hairdo. Eilish explains that a holiday edition Barbie inspired her look, while she remenced on her childhood.
Frank Ocean
Who knew that Frank Ocean had a baby? The baby - green, not living, and a robot - accompanied Ocean to the Met. The puzzling accessory complemented the artist’s slime green hair. Ocean kept his outfit simple, wearing a three-piece black suit by his signature brand Homer.
Kendall Jenner
Kendall Jenner’s dress hit the nail on the head at the 2021 Met Gala. Jenner wore a jaw-dropping sheer, bedazzled Givenchy dress, completed with a rhinestone encrusted choker. The dress paid homage to Audrey Hepburn’s iconic Givenchy dress, notes People.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
AOC made sure to make her fashion statement loud and clear. The Democratic congresswomen from Brooklyn displayed “Tax the Rich'' in bright red on the back of her white gown, designed by Brother Vellies. Gold hoops and a single flower in her hair completed the look. The dress sparked controversy over whether AOC should have broadcasted the message of taxing the rich while attending an event with extremely wealthy people.
Emily Blunt
Although Emily Blunt doesn’t have American roots, her outfit embodied the theme perfectly. The actress arrived in a Miu Miu sheer dress with a luxurious cape and breathtaking head piece. Jessica Pastor, Emily Blunt’s stylist, said that Hedy Lamarr, a popular actress in the film “Ziegfeld Girl” inspired the look.
