AFHS Autumn Picks

The trees have begun to show off their beautiful foliage, the air has turned chilly in time for sweater weather and houses’ front steps have been embellished with pumpkins. The changing landscape can only mean that the season of fall has arrived. Fall not only comes with breathtaking scenery but with homey and hearty activities.

According to a student survey, the following activities rank highest as AFHS’s favorites for fall. Halloween stands at the top of the activity leaderboard. The holiday calls on those that have a sweet tooth. In addition to the high blood sugar levels, Halloween allows kids of all ages to let their imaginations soar when dressing up as beloved characters. Ella Zuchowski (11), expresses her fondness for dressing up, saying, “It gives [people the] opportunity to make a character that [they] love [their] own, and combine [themselves] with that character.”

Pumpkin carving held second place in the survey. Many students enjoy the idea of making a mess while scooping out the goo, carving complex shapes, and finally seeing the candlelit masterpiece glow in the night. Rushil Dasari (11), enjoys pumpkin carving “Because it allows me to express my artistic side.” Pumpkin carving not only encourages creativity but allows participants to get their hands messy.

One student said that his favorite activity was rehearsing The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow, AFHS’s theater production, maybe in an attempt to plug the show. Another student expressed how much they loved eating candy corn, while another suggested that a Harry Potter marathon with a running time of 20 hours screams fall ambiance.

Most AFHS students actively participate in all the activities autumn has to offer. From the spooky scares of Halloween to the fun-filled feast on Thanksgiving, the season of fall doesn’t fail to provide fun and festive things to do.
