Many events depicted in television have impacted culture and society. For a while now, a lot of people may have noticed an eerie similarity to current events from their favorite TV shows. For example, the longest American series and sitcom, The Simpsons, became popular for their many predictions that actually came true.
Rise of President Trump
Donald Trump running for president became one of the most well-known events that had been predicted. Many saw the foreshadowing in The Simpsons on Season 11 Episode 17; titled “Bart to the Future.” Originally being made as a joke to the writers, the thought of Donald Trump running for president became hilarious to them, along with the audience. This unprecedented situation seemed unlikely until the election in 2016, when Donald Trump not only ran, but also won the election and became the 45th president of the United States.
Technology
The Simpsons, along with other TV shows, predicted creations of modern technology that we know today. For example, smart watches, video chats, iPads, and flat screen TVs. In seasons 6 and 8 of The Simpsons, smart watches, video chats, and even autocorrect made an appearance. Season 6 of The Simpsons came out in 1994; way before these objects we know today had been created. Another show that predicted forms of technology would be Star Trek: a sci-fi show that gave viewers a glimpse of the future. They showed viewers the invention of the “touchscreen computer tablet” made 23 years before Apple’s iPad came out in 2012.
The 9/11 Attacks
Many predictions came from quotes, video games, posters, and backgrounds of TV show scenes; many foresaw signs of the tragedy, 9/11, before it occurred. For example, the old Cartoon Network show: Johnny Bravo (2001), The Simpsons (1997), adult animated comedy series: Beavis and Butthead (1994), have shown similarities of 9/11 years, or even months, before it happened.
Super Bowl
A TV series from 1989-1993 called Quantum Leap, became known for predicting the future and time travel. With most of them being wrong, they have predicted the Super Bowl XXX. The episode premiered in 1990, six years before the Super Bowl XXX game. In the show, the character, Sam, casually mentions the Steelers playing and trailing by 3 points, which actually happened in the 30th game. Another Super Bowl prediction would be Lady Gaga’s halftime show that appeared in The Simpsons: Season 23, Episode 22. That episode premiered 5 years before her performance.
It can be fun, but also scary seeing uncanny parallels between real-life events and TV shows as people eventually figure out that it possibly predicted a huge event. Now people wonder what else could be predicted.
