Thanksgiving Events Throughout North Carolina

This Thanksgiving season, the COVID-19 pandemic has prohibited large family gatherings. Those looking for a new experience should consider participating in alternative opportunities such as virtual parades, turkey trots, and charitable events.

The annual Novant Health Thanksgiving parade will no longer be an in-person event due to the current pandemic. However, being one of the longest running events in Charlotte, the celebration will continue through an online broadcast this year. WBTV will air the parade on Thanksgiving Day with an exciting set of the most prominent past performances, floats, and marching bands. Last year over 100,000 people filled the streets to watch the parade, and even though the same outcome proves impossible this year, parade organizers will be working hard to make this event just as special.

An even more local option would be the Turkey Trot footrace, which has been a tradition in hundreds of cities around America for many years. Some participants truly get into the spirit and dress like turkeys, the Turkey Chase in Raleigh, which has both an in person and virtual option, can still be seen on November 28th. Apex also holds a 5K Turkey Run each year that will now be completely virtual. Simply sign up, walk or run the 5K, and try to beat the turkey’s time.

There will also be a few safe in-person events to go to, such as the new Winter Wonderlights experience at the Greensboro Science Center. This event will include 12 unique realms of dancing fountains, woodland wonders, a gingerbread barn, and the joyful sounds of the season. Though it will not be open on Thanksgiving Day, it continues to be a great option for the weekend to extend the holiday fun. Lastly, for those wanting to give back this Thanksgiving, Saint Michael's Church in Cary will be holding a Thanksgiving basket project, giving to thousands of families that can't put food on the table. Both donations and volunteers will be welcomed and appreciated, and more details can be found on Facebook regarding this event. Enjoy Thanksgiving safely this year and all the new opportunities that come with it.
