Celebrities and companies all over the world struggle to be on top and have their moment in the spotlight. People like Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and Demi Lovato have all been involved in a stunt that made them more famous than they already happened to be. Some stunts worked out well and some only made the celebrities’ reputations worse.
In 2010 Lady Gaga pulled off a stunt that people talk about to this day. Gaga has been known for not only being a singer, but for having a very interesting fashion sense. She’s worn a dress with Kermit the Frog stuffed animals all over her, a red lace dress that covers her entire face, and even a dress with plastic bubbles glued over a simple white dress. Her most memorable dress, worn in 2010 to MTV’s VMA awards, covered Gaga head to toe in raw meat, including her shoes and a headband. According to Billboard, Gaga wore the dress because “she wanted to protest against the military's ‘don’t ask, don’t tell, policy”. The dress made a statement against the government who put restrictions on the rights of gay soldiers.
Many Camp Rock fans may remember the short-lived relationship between Demi Lovato and Joe Jonas. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest, Demi claimed that the feelings between them always existed, but they decided to wait to start dating. Little did Demi know that Disney executives encouraged Joe to enter into the relationship with her for a ratings boost. Hollywood said “Demi had no idea and was blindsided when Joe and his dad told Demi the truth.” Both gained publicity because of the stunt Jonas pulled.
Kayne West, an American rapper, had also pulled a stunt that both scared and excited people all over the United States. According to Vanity Fair, Kanye said, “God is so good. Today I am voting for the first time in my life for the President of the United States, and it’s for someone I truly trust...me.” Kanye announced on many different platforms that he would be running for President in 2020. Obviously he didn’t end up being elected, but he posted on his Twitter that he would indeed be running again in 2024.
Emma Hopkins, a sophomore at Apex Friendship, had been asked what her favorite publicity stunt happened to be. She responded by saying, “probably Jake Paul and Tana Mongeau getting married for publicity and then having a fake fight after their wedding.” The stunt occurred only a year ago in 2019. They later revealed that their marriage had not been real, but still managed to drive more followers to their social media accounts
Overall, publicity stunts can have either a good or bad effect, depending on who pulls the stunts and how effective the stunts happen to be. Many celebrities admit to pulling them, but some only result in bad press.
