Some people think that in order to succeed in life, a person needs a pretty face and killer body. On the other hand, many prefer personality to looks. Opinions on the controversial topic of whether someone should get plastic surgery differs from person to person. Some think that plastic surgery requires major alterations to one’s body, while others think it can be as simple as removing a mole. Either way, the obvious solution to the problem remains simple: mind your own business. No one has the same outlook on life, so judging someone based on their personal decisions about their own bodies shouldn’t concern anyone else.
Being confident in your skin makes people happier, as proven by Dr. John Sherman , a doctor specializing in plastic surgery. He explains that having an operation genuinely makes his patients happier with both themselves and life. “Those imperfections in our appearance can begin to weigh on us, keeping us from the assurance and poise that contributes to our success in both our personal and professional efforts.” He says his job involves helping people to be the best version of themselves, which proves the point that society people has begun to associate plastic surgery with negative connotations.
The other side of the argument claims that receiving plastic surgery changes a person’s identity, and that altering natural-born physical features should not be an option. Of course, some people get plastic surgery to look like someone else, possibly a friend, influencer, or celebrity. Plastic surgeons like Dr. Freeman and Dr. Hagan, who both work for Freeman Plastic Surgery in Idaho, have acknowledged the argument. They compared some patients’ cases to celebrity Valeria Lukyanova, who wanted to look like a real-life Barbie Doll. They explain that plastic surgery should help with self-confidence, rather than to replicate celebrities. Freeman and Hagan added to their point, saying, “It’s not unreasonable to want to change something about your appearance to feel more confident. In fact, that’s a perfectly normal and healthy reason to choose plastic surgery. But choosing to have plastic surgery for self-improvement is much different than choosing to have plastic surgery because you feel as though you need to be ‘fixed’.”
Regardless of the situation, some people will always abuse power and regardless of the well-intentioned options that science offers. Overall, the argument over plastic surgery can be based on opinions, facts, and personal experience, but regardless, people have the right to choose what they do with their bodies.
