President-elect Joe Biden has planned to take action on climate change. His plan includes changing measures across the federal government while expanding it beyond environmental agencies. This should speed the U.S. efforts to slow the process of global warming and acknowledge that the problem impacts many aspects of the environment.

According to the BBC, Biden has said he would stop leasing any new oil and gas rights on federal land. He could also direct agencies to tighten emissions standards for the electricity sector and to push the industry toward a goal of net-zero emissions by 2035. He also plans to raise fuel economy standards for cars and trucks to make the transformation faster.

In addition, the Biden team has considered either the creation of a separate new White House office that will be devoted to climate change, or a coordinating council modeled after the national security and economic councils. Three people close to the administration said they expect the Biden team to choose Ali Zaidi, a former climate adviser during Obama’s term who now serves as deputy secretary of energy in New York state, for a top position advising the president and coordinating work among agencies.

According to NPR, the president-elect has said that in his first days of office he will sign an executive order to conserve 30% of America’s land and waters by 2030 and protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil drilling. Biden also plans to organize a “Climate World Summit” to help leaders of major carbon-emitting nations take action on climate change. The U.S. remains the second-largest source of global carbon dioxide emissions, behind China.
