Do AFHS Students Feel Safe at School?

Students, teachers, and parents have all heard of the debate on whether schools happen to be safe or not for students. Of course, school this year, as students complete school work virtually, differs from being on campus in-person. When students head back to school and leave the virtual setting, the question of whether schools happen to be safe still lingers for students of the LGBTQ community and students of racially diverse backgrounds.
There can be many different reasons as to why school can be identified as safe, but some students have experienced “backlash” because of their sexual preference or identity. A junior student at AFHS, who wishes to remain anonymous, described their time at AFHS as “difficult.” The student heard many homophobic slurs and insults have been heard around the school halls without consideration of the meaning of those words. Although this student endured challenging homophobic experiences, they decided to “stand up for others and help people when they need it.” Another student, who also wanted to remain anonymous, claimed that being a part of SAGA, Straight and Gay Alliance Club, helped them see that they weren’t alone and that there were others like them. Some people at school feel as though words get thrown around carelessly, and that the administration doesn’t do a very good job of disciplining the students who use derogatory words. Even though some students feel as though people don’t get disciplined for their actions, the school does support the SAGA club which provides a sense of unity and belonging.
Race Relations also affects a students’ feeling of safety. As we all know, 2020 has been a year filled with rioting, chaos, and racial injustices. AFHS, a school of students with various racial backgrounds, has students that have been either insulted or complimented because of their race. Jonathan West, a sophomore at Apex Friendship, claimed that the school was “safe” for people of mixed races. West, who comes from a racially diverse background, said that he’s “never been made fun of for my race, if anything, I’ve heard people compliment me.” However, not all students share such a positive experience when it comes to race relations. Another student, who does not want their name mentioned, said that fellow students use profanity and derogatory terms. The student stated that they have felt unsafe at times while at school. Even though the student felt unsafe, clubs like SAGA and BSA, Black Student Alliance Club, provide an outlet for inclusion and education of all races and ethnicities.
Personal perception may persuade one to believe either side of the argument regarding safety at AFHS. However, a lack of understanding and personalization may lead students to be unable to relate to those students that differ from them. This can create an environment where students may physically feel safe, yet emotionally, feel a lack of support from fellow students and administrators.
