Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, stars Shameik Moore and Jake Johnson. The movie depicts a version of Spider-Man fighting alongside other Spider-Men in order to defeat Kingpin.
This innovative film not only changes the game for Spider-Man movies, it also revolutionizes animation and revitalizes the superhero genre. The audience will lap up every second of it. This movie can be described as gorgeous, funny, full of heart, and has a crew of actors gleefully committed to their roles.
With his amazing voice acting, Hollywood should just call Jake Johnson whenever they need a slightly sloppy but lovable protagonist because every time he plays that kind of character, he proves to be fantastic. Shameik Moore’s performance elevates the main protagonist, mostly due to Moore’s easy charm and slick delivery. He built a very relatable and fun character through his voice. Also, any movie where John Mulaney does anything should be considered a win.
Gorgeous animation makes this movie feel like a comic book, which has never been done before, but it should have. It works really well, and you can see all the care that went into crafting this animation. The little dots that you see if you hold the comic book real close to your face appear, the little sound effect bubbles whenever anything happens add a cute touch, and the motion lines whenever someone moves add a surprising dynamism to the movie. It looks slick and fluid, as opposed to other animated action flicks that tend to look choppy.
Straying away from superhero clichés, the writing in Spider-Verse instead embraces the humanity of our favorite characters. While not perfect, they have problems too. They catch feelings, they have bad days, they go through a lot. And while this may sound stupid, they feel less like superHEROES, and more like superHUMANS. Kingpin has a pretty nice arc too. In a surprising choice, the directors go into his psyche in a movie marketed at least somewhat towards children.
This movie should be essential viewing for anyone who loves Spider-Man, animation, superheroes or any of the actors involved. Truly a movie for everyone, that I believe everyone can enjoy.
